Five Things You May Not Know About Golf in Grey-Bruce

Golf season is up and running in BruceGreySimcoe and you’re invited to enjoy one of our many great courses!  Steve Harron of Grey-Bruce Golf shares some cool trivia about golf in the region, packages and more.
  1. 2003 Masters champ Mike Weir was in the wedding party with Michael Todd, President and Director of Operations at Legacy Ridge Golf Club near Owen Sound, when Weir’s then-caddy Brennan Little got married. The wedding took place on July 26, 2003 in Dallas, Texas. Todd is a lifelong friend of Little’s and met Weir through junior golf.
  2. Wayne Gretzky (shown in photo with 2010 winner Peter Tomasulo) helped bring the Nationwide Tourgretzky-and-peter.jpg (now known as the Web.com Tour) to the Grey-Bruce Area from 2008-2010. Notable golfers who played here were Keegan Bradley, Chris Kirk and Ricky Barnes.
  3. After playing his round in the 2010 Nationwide event, Keegan Bradley tried out nearby Meaford Golf Course and while teeing off on the 2nd hole on Randle Run a club he borrowed from a member slipped from his hands and ended up in a pond. The incident was widely reported as Bradley talked about it during his interview the next day on the Golf Channel.
  4. Legendary golfer Moe Norman won the Owen Sound Golf and Country Club’s Pro-Am in 1988 even though he gave up on his putter part way through the round and started putting with his driver. He couldn’t be found during the awards ceremony until someone looked outside and saw him standing in the rain practising putts with his driver. Classic Moe!
  5. Based on Olympic qualifying criteria, PGA Tour player David Hearn, who played his junior golf in the Grey-Bruce area, is in a position now to be one of Canada’s two representatives this summer in Rio. Also qualifying for the Canadian team at this point is Graham DeLaet. Hearn was a junior member at Pike Lake Golf Centre near Mount Forest and played on the Grey-Bruce Junior Tour. He continues to support the club by donating items for their charity golf tournaments each year.
