Explore the islands on a Bruce Peninsula Boat Tour

Aug 02, 2018

The Bruce Peninsula has become a popular destination in recent years, and while the boat tours that regularly depart the Tobermory Harbour are well known, there's a lesser known, more intimate boat tour experience just a short drive south. Based in Oliphant, on the shores of Lake Huron, Pete and Donna Stewart operate Bruce Peninsula Boat Tours in the shallow and calm waters of The Fishing Islands.

I was lucky enough to tag along on an early morning Birding the Islands by Boat tour led by legendary local birder Doug Pedwell. We left the dock at 7 am to take advantage of the calm early morning water and also for the best opportunity to see the birds. Despite my shockingly early alarm, it was totally worth the early start.

Doug Pedwell helped those on board discover the many birds that pass through the Fishing Islands. From swans to egrets and herons and huge colonies of nesting gulls with fluffy grey babies, there's lots to see

We were able to get a good view of several nesting Blue Herons at one of the outer islands.

Bruce Peninsula Boat Tours also offers Chair Yoga with Harriet. A truly relaxing experience.

Crusing back to the dock via The Gut, the deep passage that allows boaters access to the Fishing Islands.

A longtime Oliphant resident, owner and guide Donna Stewart shared plenty of history during our tour.

In addition to birding tours, Bruce Peninsula Boat Tours offers sunset cruises, photography tours, yoga tours, marine heritage tours and more aboard
their 3 pontoon boats. One of the boats even has a glass bottom viewing window to allow passengers to view local shipwrecks
