Built between 1899 and 1901, on vacant land originally owned from the Butcharts, this 3200 sq. foot Victorian/Edwardian Era home, was owned by one of the first prominent Doctors of the Owen Sound Area, Dr. John A. Hershey. Dr. Hershey, along with his Wife Annie (Anna) and children, not only resided in this grand home for 20 years from 1902 to 1922, but also had his practice out of the 4th Ave East side of the home. Dr. Hershey performed Births and Simple Operations out of the 'office side' of his home, when patients could not make the trek to the small hospital Owen Sound originally had. One of Dr. Hershey's sons, John Harold Hershey, was a soldier in the first world war, but came home early due to wounds from combat. Dr. Hershey would also have a younger medical student come around once in a while to observe and learn from his practice, whom then went on a short time later, to become 'Medical Inventor' of thoracic surgical tools and whom performed tuberculosis operations... Dr. Norman Bethune.
Few doctors will be remembered by older residents than Dr. J. A. Hershey. Dr. Hershey was a leader, in many respects, of the community's life at the time, serving on town Council for many years, friends with the Mayor and also providing leadership in such movements as the YMCA. He was the first President of the "Y" when it reorganized in 1917.
