From the GTA, it’s not too far a trip to experience the ultimate in winter experiences. For non-skiers, there are plenty of other options for outdoor fun – snow tubing, snowshoeing, ice fishing (check ice conditions before heading out), cross-country skiing and sleigh rides. Barrie Winterfest, held in early February, takes place on Barrie’s waterfront with events ranging from ice sculptures to dog sledding to axe throwing to the bone-chilling Polar Bear Dip.  
Prefer to spend your winter indoors?  Check out Christmas Glow Barrie, on until January 6th, Ontario’s largest indoor family Christmas festival.  The Simcoe County Museum, just a short drive from Barrie to Minesing, is open year-round, with exhibits, programs and events geared to all ages.  Chase away the winter blahs at the February Blues Festivalin late January/early February, with live acts at a variety of venues in Barrie and surrounding area. 
And, for craft beer lovers, a visit to Barrie totally needs to include a visit to Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery, leader of the “Craft Beer Revolution”. Barrie is also home to the Redline Brewhouseand Barnstormer Brewing & Distilling Co.  In nearby Alliston is Beattie’s Distillers, where this family-run business grows its own potatoes to create its vodka, poitin (a traditional Irish distilled beverage) and gin, tours and tastings are available by appointment.  Prefer a glass of vino?
