Local Produce
Winter is the time to reap the benefits of the fall harvest – local honey, jams, jellies, relishes, chutneys and pickled preserves fill the shelves at local farm stores, specialty shops and winter farmers’ markets in BruceGreySimcoe. Locally grown apples are still to be had, too, at some farm stores and farmers’ markets, along with fresh baked apple pies. The
Red Prince, unique to Grey County, is available during the winter months, from January to early summer.
Homegrown in BruceGreySimcoe are fresh eggs, dairy products, poultry, fish, beef and game such as elk, venison and bison. Local butcher shops can ensure you get the right cut of meat and help with cooking tips, too. Fresh baked goodies, bread, honey, maple syrup and more can turn a winter’s meal into something splendid. Prefer organic produce and goods? You’ll find those here, too.
The cold season doesn’t mean the end of fresh veggies either – beets, carrots, cabbage, potatoes, rutabagas, squash and parsnips are some of the traditional winter vegetables available at our indoor farmers’ markets and year-round farm stores, like the family-run
Nicholyn Farms and
Sideroad Farm Store. Local food co-operatives like
Eat Local Grey Bruce and the
Simcoe County Farm2Door are good sources for products from area producers, too.
Fresh air, fresh produce – the perfect winter combo!
