Midland / Penetanguishene
This winter, make it your goal to
plan ahead, book ahead before packing up and heading out on your advenute
Winter is cause for celebration for these two waterfront communities! Located on the shores of Georgian Bay, Midland and Penetanguishene are transformed into a winter wonderland during the colder months of the year. They’re a natural magnet for outdoor enthusiasts, with cross-country ski and snowshoe trails, snowmobile trails and small-town charm.
Known as the “Gateway to Georgian Bay”, Penetanguishene has lots to keep you entertained this winter.
Awenda Provincial Park offers an adventurous backcountry style experience for cross-country skiers and snowshoers. Trails start at the warm and toasty Trail Centre, with 17 kilometres of ski trail and trail-breaking opportunities for snowshoers.
Book a guided snowmobile tour with
Diverse Rentals and explore Awenda and surrounding trails. Take a breather from your outdoor activities to peruse the collection at the
Penetanguishene Centennial Museum & Archives, a treasure trove of local history.
Midland is certainly no slouch when it comes to winter activities, either. Wye Marsh, open all year, not only has
trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, they offer
snowshoe ecotours (lessons included) – a great way to see “behind-the-scenes” and learn about animal habitat at this awesome nature facility dedicated to stewardship and environmental awareness of these wetlands. Equipment rentals are available. Off the trails, visit the Birds of Prey area and the reptiles and amphibians in the interpretive centre.
If you’re visiting Midland during the week, be sure to tour the
Huronia Museum. And live entertainment is back at the
Midland Cultural Centre, located in the heart of downtown.
Downtown Midland is also where you’ll find an enticing and eclectic choice of eateries, perfect for refueling after time spent outdoors in the brisk winter air or pursuing indoor interests.
