The culture and small-town weekend: Clarksburg, Meaford, Owen Sound and Southampton
Route: Clarksburg and Thornbury → Meaford → Owen Sound → Southampton
Overnights: One night near Thornbury and one night in Southampton
Anchor experience: An evening performance at Marsh Street Centre
Day 1: Art, shops and an evening performance
Begin in Clarksburg, known locally for its concentration of galleries and artists. Visit Marsh Street Gallery, a collective featuring paintings, sculpture, pottery, jewellery, woodwork and mixed-media pieces from regional artists. Leave time to browse Clarksburg’s small shops before continuing a few minutes north to Thornbury.
Have lunch in Thornbury and spend the afternoon exploring its shops, galleries and waterfront. Visitors interested in local beverages can stop at Thornbury Craft Co for a take-home purchase or tasting before checking in.
Stay at Penny’s Motel, which offers an updated motel experience with a restaurant, courtyard, firepits and outdoor gathering spaces. Leave the late afternoon free before dinner and an evening concert, performance or community event at the Marsh Street Centre.
Stay: Penny’s Motel.
Day 2: Meaford and Owen Sound, then west to Southampton
Drive approximately 15 minutes to Meaford and begin with breakfast at Station 87, located downtown near the water. Explore the galleries at Meaford Hall Arts & Cultural Centre, which hosts changing exhibitions alongside concerts, theatre, comedy and film programming. Visitors can also browse downtown shops or walk to the harbour before lunch.
Continue approximately 30 kilometres to Owen Sound. Visit the Tom Thomson Art Gallery, which holds a nationally significant collection connected to the Canadian artist, and then spend time in the River District, where independent shops, restaurants and heritage buildings are concentrated within a walkable downtown area.
Drive to Southampton, check into either South Beach Motel or The Southampton Inn, and leave enough time to settle in before dinner. End the evening with a walk along the waterfront or through the downtown rather than adding another scheduled attraction.
Stay: South Beach Motel or The Southampton Inn.
Day 3: Bruce County art and heritage
Begin at the Bruce County Museum & Cultural Centre, where exhibitions and programs explore the history and communities of Bruce County. Follow it with a visit to the Southampton Arts Centre, a gallery and art school representing more than 40 local artists working across visual art, jewellery, pottery and fine craft.
Spend the rest of the morning browsing Southampton’s downtown shops and stop for lunch before travelling home. A short walk to the shoreline, Pioneer Park or the harbour provides the scenic component without turning the final day into another major outing.
